Games for Student Engagement

Student engagement can be created through many activities and for many reasons. One motivation I have always found that encourages engagement is fun. Having fun seems less like learning and games do that splendidly.

I am not sure how other teachers view games- maybe as a filler, or just as "review". While games are generally a way to review, I think they can be a great way to reinforce learning. Review is not simply about recall. It's stretching the mind to remember things. And when using a game, it is another experience a student may draw from in order to remember those things.

But games can be more than just review, they can also be used for practice. For instance, a Go Fish! math game can be used to practice addition/subtraction or multiplication/division. Like here:

OR, you could use a game like rock, paper, scissors to teach probability:

I have also created quite a few videos for review ideas here:

Whatever you use games for, including them in your classrooms at various points throughout the year will be great for students. What are other games you have used for engagement?
